POND PLANT BIO:
Soft rush has attractive narrow, round, foliage and upright habit that looks beautiful and performs well around ponds and water gardens. It adds an architectural element wherever it is planted and its upright habit is impressive in the landscape! Foliage remains semi-evergreen and old foliage should be cut back in early spring. Although the stems appear from a distance as coarse and stiff, they are soft to the touch. It’s been used as floor matting in China and Japan and lighting in Medieval England. Called “rushlight”, lengths of peeled rush were soaked in wax or grease and then lit like a candle. Waterfowl, songbirds and game birds love the seed heads! It’s easily propagated by division of its rhizomes as well as seed. It also may help hold back the encroachment of cattails.
