This white Japanese water iris, Iris laevigata ‘Snowdrift’, is a superb plant, native to Asia, where it grows in marshes and at the edge of lakes and streams. It bears delightful, double white, beardless flowers with lilac margins on unbranched stems, which rise from broad, strap-shaped leaves in May – June. Iris laevigata is said to be the most water-demanding of the ‘water-loving’ irises, but it does not have to be grown in standing water. The growth of the rhizome is strongly horizontal like Iris pseudacorus and it seeks out new soils each year in which to set new feeder roots. It truly is ideal for growing in the margins of ponds or even in a bog garden!
