Frogbit is a floating powerhouse for your pond and a super-nutritious food source for your fish or turtle pals. Limnobium spongia, aka frogbit, can grow as two forms, upright if planted in soil forming a silhouette of a small water lily, or as a floating rosette form. Only a few inches around, the green heart-shaped leaves resemble miniature lilies, and it has a lovely, diminutive creamy white bloom. Turn the leaf over and you’ll notice a swollen and discolored area where the petioles join the blades — It’s spongy pockets of air! Hence the common name spongeplant! It’s super easy to grow, provides excellent surface coverage, and aides in algae elimination! In larger ponds, the leaves of Limnobium are eaten by sliders and other turtles, and the seeds are eaten by waterfowl such as the Green-Winged Teal, Mallard, Red-Ringed Duck, Wood Duck, and more.In smaller ponds or containers, frogbit’s adorable, evergreen leaves look fantastic floating on the surface, and sit brilliantly on shelves, occasionally cascading over the lips of containers.
