POND PLANT BIO:
‘Spiralis’ has contorted, corkscrew, dark green needlelike leaves that grow vertically and provide a wonderful, prominent addition to your water garden. It grows in rich soil and loves to hang out at the water’s edge as well as up to 6 inches in water. It’s been used as floor matting in China and Japan and lighting in Medieval England. Called ‘rushlight’, lengths of peeled rush were soaked in wax or grease and then lit like a candle. Waterfowl, songbirds and game birds love the seed heads! It’s easily propagated by division of its rhizomes as well as seed. It also may help hold back the encroachment of cattails.
