POND PLANT BIO:
Dramatic dark burgundy leaves provide a high contrast, long lasting appeal to back borders and pond edges. Its enormous glossy pointed leaves remain dark red in color with prominent dark green stripes and tinges of burgundy throughout the season. Blooms in the summer and into fall atop tall stalks with deep red, showy orchid-like blossoms beloved by hummingbirds. It plays exceptionally well against boldly colored walls and is excellent in pots on a porch, patio, terrace and balcony. It prefers to grow in moist to wet soil, and will even tolerate some standing water. Consider applying a thick mulch around the root zone in winter to protect it in exposed locations or colder microclimates. A fast grower, under ideal conditions it can be expected to live for approximately 10 years.

Cannas became very popular in Victorian times. ‘Dark Knight’ has a debatable parentage and reportedly was introduced by S. Percy Lancaster of Alipore Cannas of Calcutta India, but others list it as a synonym for the variety ‘Assaut’ which was introduced in 1920 by the French seed and plant breeding company Vimorin-Andrieux. In addition, this cultivar also possibly went by the name ‘VorwŠrts’, meaning forward in German, a name used to identify the Social Democratic Party of Germany in the late 19th century.
