Versatility of Amaryllis

Amaryllis can be grown indoors and outdoors (in suitable climates), making them a versatile addition to any collection. They can bring life to indoor spaces during the winter months and add color to outdoor gardens in the spring and summer.

Amaryllis only requires a little space to grow. They can thrive in small pots, making them ideal for those with limited gardening space.

Getting Ready for Planting

If you can’t bury them immediately, keep the bulbs cool, ideally between 40-50 degrees Fahrenheit. How to Plant

Use a nutrient-rich potting mix for planting your bulbs. These mixes are often readily available. Immerse the bulb in the soil so that about 1/3 of the bulb should be exposed.

Positioning and Watering

After planting:

  1. Place the bulb or pot in a location with direct sunlight and warmth, which is crucial for stem growth and will help wake your bulb up from dormancy
  2. Aim for a temperature around 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Begin with very minimal watering. Amaryllis doesn’t require much water. Ensure that the soil is completely dry before watering again.

Time to Bloom

Typically, bulbs bloom in 6-10 weeks. Depending on when you want your bulbs to bloom will dictate when you should take them out of dormancy. Our rule of thumb is to wake them up on November 1st for Christmas blooms, and February 1st for Easter blooms.

Or if you have multiple bulbs stagger when you wake them up, and you’ll have blooms all Winter long!

Post-Bloom Maintenance

Once the amaryllis blooms fade, they can bloom again. Amaryllis can produce multiple stems with multiple blooms! Remove spent flowers and trim the stem to the top of the bulb

Storing the Bulb

Clean the bulb and store it in a cool, dark place between 40-50 degrees Fahrenheit, like a basement or heated garage for at least six weeks.

After the 6-week storage period, you can plant the bulbs again. For best results, plant them about eight weeks before you want them to bloom, ensuring a timely display of flowers.
